The Philippines better watch out! “A” is heading their way. According to Variety, a Filipino adaptation of Pretty Little Liarsis in production. Southeast Asia may never be the same again!
The 22-episode adaptation of the ABC family murder mystery drama is already in production in the Philippines, with an air date set for April on the country’s TV5. How cool is that? We’re especially curious to hear how Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell (Emily) feels about this development. The actress was born and raised in Canada, but her mother is Filipino, emigrating to Canada when she was 19 years old. Shay visited the Philippines in 2012 to promote the third season of PLL, telling Yahoo! Philippines, “I know people here are so amazing and I just can’t wait to explore.”
PLL isn’t the only American television drama that has recently scored an adaptation in Asia. Variety notes that now-ended dramas Gossip Girl and ER are also getting adaptations in Thailand and India, respectively. Gossip Girl will get an 18-episode run to add to its 25-episode Mexican adaptation run that aired last year. ER, which stopped airing new episodes in America in 2009 after a whopping 15 seasons is under option in India, but has not yet gone into production.
“We are seeing a significant increase in the number of our scripted formats which are traveling successfully around the world and we are delighted to be able to partner with such a high calibre of production companies to bring these programs to the screen in Asia,” Andrew Zein of Warner Brothers said of the Asian interest in the dramas. “Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl and ER are all such iconic Warner Bros. shows proved to be audience favorites in the US and we’re confident about their potential to equally entertain the audiences in the Philippines, Thailand and India.”
Catch the next episode of Pretty Little Liars on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC Family.
