Zendaya Coleman accidentally elbowed him in the face during rehearsals, making him bleed everywhere and ultimately have to get 14 stitches. Even though he danced through it — helping Zendaya top the Leaderboard going into tonight’s finale — Val told On the Red Carpet the eye wound is probably even worse than we think.
"You don't even know how bad it looks, to be honest," Val told OTRC. "You can see bone underneath that. Serious. It was a deep cut, like a boxer cut, but it's all good. The funniest thing was [Zendaya’s] face 'cause it happened in the beginning of the dance and dress rehearsals are really important, you have to finish. She looked at me and I was like 'Don't stop. Don't stop.' The craziest thing was by the time we got to the kids' part [of the Freestyle], I already had blood all over my face. So when I ran around and the kids are like 'ready' and then they see my face and I see their face..." He laughed. Zendaya said, "We're all scared! We didn't know what to do and he just kept smiling so I was like 'Apparently he's fine. I don't even know if he knows that blood is dripping all over him right now!'"
Val told E! News the eye pain actually helped him to focus. "My back is killing me. Like seriously killing me. My shoulder is killing me. [My eye] honestly took my mind off all that pain. I'm lucky it happened … it made me enjoy the moment a little more."
Zendaya told OTRC, win or lose, she's done things she never thought possible on DWTS. "I get to say that, even though [age] doesn't really matter to me, I'm 16 and I'm here. I made it to the Finals. I get to take that with me forever, so I'm very happy."
