Pretty Little Liars’ Five Best Mother Moments

In honor of Mother’s Day, we have a list of five of our favorite mom moments on Pretty Little Liars. We have to admit: this show has some pretty bad ass mothers!

Ella comforts Aria over Ezria drama

Aria (Lucy Hale) seems like an easy teenager to parent. She may have fallen in love with her English teacher, but she’s also frighteningly mature. She probably gets a lot of that from mom Ella (Holly Marie Combs), who is also level-headed, communicative, and honest about her feelings. In this scene from Season 3, Episode 21: “Out of Sight, Out of Mind,” Ella talks to an upset Aria, who is trying to deal with the reality that Ezra has a son. Rather than dismiss Aria’s feelings, give her false hope for the future, or let her own feeling for Ezra cloud the discussion, Ella tells a teary Aria that, “Not every relationship is not meant to last forever. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is take a step back and give yourself a chance to breathe.” Added parental bonus: it seems like Aria takes the advice to heart.

Ashley Marin asks Hanna to the father/daughter dance

It’s no secret we love Ashley Marin (Laura Leighton), and we’re freaking out that we’re apparently going to hate her in Season 4. One example of her previous awesomeness comes in Season 2, Episode 22: “Father Knows Best.” First, Ashley yells at Wilden to get his act together and figure out who’s targeting her daughter, only to quickly transition into supportive mom mode and offer to take Hanna (Ashley Benson) to the father/daughter dance when Hanna’s dad bails. “I think missing out on something you’re looking forward to is lamer than going with your mother,” Ashley tells Hanna. With a badass mom like Ashley Marin, we’d have to agree.

Pam tells Emily she is a good person

In Season 3, Episode 18: “Dead to Me,” Emily is freaking out over her recovered memories, mistakenly believing that she might have had something to do with Ali’s death. Pam (Nia Peeples) tries to shake her out of it: “Sweetheart, I know who you are and you would never deliberately do anything to hurt another person.” Ems is less sure of herself, so Pam goes for the gold star (in parenting): “Emily, I am your mother and that means I can see you - all of you. Sometimes better than you can see yourself, and there’s only good there. Look at me: I promise you. There’s only good there.” Emily finally believes it and the two hug. It is heartwarming, especially for a mother/daughter relationship that was so shaky for a while when Emily came out. Yay, Pam Fields, for stepping it up.

Veronica visits Spencer in Radley

Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and her mother, Veronica (Lesley Fera), have not had an easy relationship. Her mother is judgmental and distant, often taking Melissa’s word over Spencer’s. When Spencer is in Radley, Veronica comes to see Spencer, asking her, “What happened between you and Toby? I’m not moving from this spot until I get an answer.” She doesn’t get points for execution, but she’s really trying, talking to Spencer about the time she saw Ali sneaking back into their house with a bloody lip. Veronica has a long way to go when it comes to really seeing her daughter, but she’s definitely made some progress.

Team Mom

In Season 2, Episode 19: “The Naked Truth,” we got one of the few scenes that see the Rosewood parentals conversing without their children present. In the scene, Ella, Ashley, and Veronica express concern over their girls. “Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like something’s happened to our girls,” says Ashley. “I’ve tried to protect Hanna, but when she lost Alison...” Veronica, also concerned, takes a different angle: “I don’t think the moment was when they lost Alison. I think the moment was when they met Alison.” Insightful. It’s nice to see these moms talking, as they know and love each others’ daughters. Basically, they’ve all got Team Liars’ collective back.
