Who says watching TV doesn't do any good? A viewer of the HGTV reality real estate show Flip or Flop proved to be a literal life-saver when she noticed a lump on the neck of one of the show's stars, Tarek El Moussa.

We've known that Tarek, who hosts the show with his wife Christina, has been battling thyroid cancer for the past few years. And now we know the lucky way he found out he had the disease.

Ryan Read, a registered nurse, was watching the show in 2013 when she noticed the lump on the host's thyroid. She emailed the show's production company to voice her concerns.

"This is not a joke," Ryan writes in the email. "I'm a registered nurse. I've been watching Flip or Flop. I noticed that the host Tarek has a large nodule on his thyroid, and he needs to have it checked out."

Sure enough, the 34-year-old reality star went to a doctor and had a biopsy, which uncovered cancer in his thyroid that had also spread to his lymph nodes. Now, after years of treatment, Tarek's cancer is in remission, and he and Christina welcomed their second child earlier this year.

So don't let anyone tell you that watching TV isn't healthy — you just might save someone's life!
