Demi Lovato may have come a long way since she was admitted to rehab after dealing with addiction and an eating disorder three years ago, but it doesn’t mean she doesn’t work hard to maintain her health today. In fact, the 21-year-old “Neon Lights” singer has a daily regimen that helps her keep her bipolar disorder under control.

“It’s a daily thing. I treat it with medication. Not everybody does that, but for me it works,” Demi tells Cosmopolitan for Latinas during her cover interview for the summer 2014 issue. “That’s what works for me — medicating, checking in with people, being honest, and being grateful for things.”

And aside from the motivation to stay healthy and happy for herself, Demi has another driving force behind getting her life back together: Her younger sister Madison, who you may have seen as the daughter of Eva Longoria’s character, Gabrielle, on Desperate Housewives.

“When I was younger, I needed someone in the spotlight to idolize, who stood for positivity and light and happiness, and wanted to change the world,” Demi says. “And because I didn’t have that, I realized, I want to do that, if only for my 12-year-old little sister.”

A very noble thing to do! And now that Demi’s able to think clearly, a visit to Kenya really drove home the importance of keeping her priorities in order and being thankful for everything she has.

“I was used to drinking and doing drugs on my birthday,” Demi admits to the mag. “I always imagined my 21st being a huge party where I’d get sh—t-faced and go crazy. But I realized there’s so much more to life than that. Imagine walking 10 miles a day just to get water for your family. We have so much to be grateful for.”
