FOX Boss Kevin Reilly to Depart — What Does This Mean For Glee?

It was confirmed today, May 29, that FOX’s Chairman of Entertainment Kevin Reilly is stepping down from his position at the end of June. Kevin has been with FOX since 2007, and he’s held the Chairman of Entertainment position since 2012. Just a few weeks ago, Kevin unveiled FOX’s 2014-2015 television schedule at the Fanfronts in New York City, but after a lackluster 2013-2014 season, his departure doesn’t exactly come as much of a surprise.

One-time hit American Idol shed tons of viewers this past season, as did Glee, which pretty much saw record lows week after week. To add insult to injury, the only new programs from the last year which generated positive buzz were Sleepy Hollow and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Per the Los Angeles Times, FOX ended the TV season in fourth place in overall viewers, with an average of 7.5 million viewers a night, helped in part by large audiences for NFL football games, including the Super Bowl.

Kevin announced his resignation in an email to his employees on May 29. “While difficult decisions have to be made every day, none have weighed more heavily on me than this,” he began. “The inspired FOX leadership, coupled with your commitment to excellence at FBC [Fox Broadcasting Co.], has provided one of the most rewarding chapters in my life.”

The search for Kevin’s successor is said to be underway already, but FOX Networks Group chairman Peter Rice made it clear that FOX was very thankful for all that Kevin has done for the network. “We are extremely grateful to him for his leadership, beginning with The Shield and Nip/Tuck at FX and continuing through Glee, The Following, Sleepy Hollow, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine at FOX,” he said.

Speaking of Glee, can we expect this leadership change to affect the show’s final season?

Since Kevin already confirmed earlier this month that Season 6 would be delayed until early 2015 (and likely much shorter than seasons past) we doubt there are any other Glee-related changes coming our way, but we’ll likely have to wait until a new Chairman of Entertainment is appointed before any additional info about Season 6 is revealed.

Kevin has always been a champion of Glee and we’re sad to see him go, but how do you feel? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!

Glee Season 6 is expected to debut in 2015.
