FOX Orders Gabourey Sidibe’s New TV Show, Empire, to Series

The next time you see Gabourey Sidibe acting on on TV, it may not be in American Horror Story! FOX just ordered Empire to series — a show in which the Oscar nominee has a recurring role. That means Empire will make it to air during the 2014-2015 television season.

Deadline announced the happy news yesterday, May 6 — which happened to be Gabourey's 31st birthday. Now that's a helluva present!

Empire is the tale of Lucious Lyon (played by fellow Oscar nominee Terrence Howard) a "charismatic, savvy music superstar who is about to take his company, Empire Entertainment, public. Raised on the streets, he has never backed away from a fight and will resort to any measures, fair or foul, to defend his beloved Empire."

The rest of the cast includes Malik Yoba, Jussie Smollett, and a third Oscar nominee, Taraji P. Henson.

As we previously reported, Gabby will recur as Lucious's hard-working assistant. (Don't worry, Horror fans. Ryan Murphy promises she will be back for Freak Show.)

The pilot re-teamed director Lee Daniels and writer Danny Strong — who previously collaborated on the 2013's The Butler. (Danny, perhaps best known for his role as Jonathan on Buffy, is also writing the last two Hunger Games movies.)

Another big name attached to the project is Timbaland, who is supervising the music for the series.

Hey, congrats to Gabourey — the more projects, the better!
