What Is Freeform? 3 Things to Know About ABC Family’s New Name

Confused? We don't blame you. Here's a rundown of what you need to know about the name change. Spoiler alert: It's really nothing to freak out about.
Is the Channel Changing?
No. Not at all. Freeform will still have all your favorite shows from ABC Family, it will still show Disney movies, and the number isn't switching on the dial. Your DVR will still know where to record your shows.
Literally the only thing changing is the name.
OK, So... Why?
The short answer basically boils down to this: ABC Family just didn't seem like an appropriate name anymore.
As ABC Family president Tom Ascheim explains, for about the last decade the channel has been targeting millennials — and the millennials are growing up. So has the channel's programming.
"Family," with its connotations of totally wholesome, all-age appropriate material, no longer fits.
Rather than ditch the audience that loves them because they got too old for the "Family" brand, the Powers That Be evolved the brand, instead.
Where Did They Get "Freeform"?
Here's how Tom explains it to Forbes: "Freeform evokes a mood, a sense of spontaneity, creativity. It’s a place where the parties are better."
So relax, everyone. We know change is scary, but everything's going to be just fine.
Catch the Pretty Little Liars Season 6 winter premiere tonight, January 12 at 8 p.m. ET on Freeform.
