Gabourey Sidibe Joining Fox Drama Pilot Empire — and Leaving American Horror Story?

Gabourey Sidibe is jumping ship to her third regular TV project. The 30-year-old actress — who starred on The Big C and American Horror Story: Coven after earning an Oscar nomination for her role in Precious — has just joined the cast of Empire, a drama pilot for FOX, Deadline reports.

According to the site, the prospective TV series "centers on Lucious Lyon [played by Oscar nominee Terrence Howard], a charismatic, savvy music superstar who is about to take his company, Empire Entertainment, public."

Gabourey will play Lucious's hard-working assistant for the project, which reunites her with Precious director Lee Daniels and writer Danny Strong — both of whom will also executive-produce the project.

Also cast in the pilot so far are Taraji B. Henson (Person of Interest) as Cookie, Lucious's ex-wife; Malik Yoba (Alphas) as Vernon, his longtime friend and the Empire chairman; and Jussie Smollett (The Mindy Project) as Jamal, his gay, musically-gifted son.

While this is undoubtedly a major career move for Gabourey, it might come as bad news to American Horror Fans, since Gabby will likely be unable to play much of a role in Season 4 of the FX anthology scarefest if FOX orders Empire to series.

But congrats to Gabourey nonetheless — we're eager to hear more about this new prospect!
