Gabby was born in Brooklyn, New York, and then raised a few miles away in Harlem the daughter of Alice Tan Ridley, a gospel singer and America's Got Talent contestant, and Ibnou Sidibe, a Senegalese cab driver.
After pursuing acting as a young woman in NYC, Gabourey hit it big when she was cast in the lead role of Lee Daniel's Academy Award-winning 2009 film Precious, picking up an Oscar nod herself.
She then took a recurring role which later became a regular role as Andrea Jackson in Showtime's dramedy The Big C, playing the student and confidant of Laura Linney's cancer-stricken teacher.
Her other high-profile gig of late was as voodoo-inclined witch Queenie in FX's American Horror Story: Coven as well as American Horror Story: Freak Show. Meanwhile, she's also playing the assistant to Terrence Howard's record company executive in the FOX's breakout hip hop drama, Empire.
