Gabrielle Union’s Being Mary Jane Premiere Scores 5 Million Viewers

Gabrielle Union’s BET drama Being Mary Jane made its long-awaited series debut this past Tuesday, January 7. The show’s been receiving great reviews and the viewers followed: The show snagged 5 million viewers on its first night!

Deadline reports Being Mary Jane clocked a whopping 3.3 million views during its premiere at 10 p.m. and then another 1.8 million for the 11 p.m. encore. BET said these numbers have made Being Mary Jane the no.1 original series debut on cable for the 2013-14 season.

Gabrielle stars as a successful news TV anchor Mary Jane Paul, who consistently works to maintain her seemingly perfect life, which is actually riddled with personal (and now) professional problems. Show creator Mara Brock Akil is at the helm of the show, while her hubby, Salim Akil, directs.

In July, the show’s pilot attracted around 4 million viewers, which prompted BET to quietly renew the show for a second season even before its second episode aired.

We’re glad to know that Gabby, as well as her castmates (which include Omari Hardwick, Richard Roundtree, Margaret Avery, and Lisa Vidal) are drawing in the crowds — and we can’t wait to see more.

Being Mary Jane airs Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. on BET.
