Gail Simmons Dishes on Keeping Pregnancy Secret While Filming Top Chef

For a living, Top Chef judge Gail Simmons is an adventurous eater. But she brought that term to a whole new level while shooting season 11 of the hit Bravo series which took place in the spice kingdom of New Orleans while hiding a big, big secret: She was pregnant with her first child!

With the help of a few cast and crew members who knew about her pregnancy, Gail made it through the season without anyone catching on. But now that the cat’s out of the bag she recently announced she’s due this winter she’s coming clean on the challenges of filming a food show while battling cravings and morning sickness. Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with her at QVC’s annual FFANY “Shoes for Sale” event on Oct. 1.

You haven’t revealed the sex of your baby. Do you know it?

I don’t know it. My doctor knows it she’s keeping it a secret. Honestly, I don’t care what I have, I just want a baby!

Talk to us about cravings.

In the beginning, I was shooting in New Orleans and it was really hot, so all I wanted was watermelon and popsicles anything that would keep me cool. I was also really into PB&J’s. But now, I feel really good. I don’t have any cravings or aversions, I just feel healthy.

For the most part, you kept your pregnancy a secret while filming. Who knew?

Tom and Padma knew. Two of the executive producers and the director knew. Oh, and my stylist definitely knew because she was seeing all the changes up close and personal. And my makeup artist, of course, because she would see me early in the morning when I wasn’t feeling my best.

What will your attitude be in terms of what food you give the baby?

I feel like I’ve got a while until the baby starts eating. I just hope it will be a good eater. All I can do is give it a diverse array of options and hope that it eats everything. I just want to make sure its eating healthy, nutritious food that will make it grow strong.

What’s the first thing you’re dying to eat once you deliver?

Sushi and runny, poached eggs — not together, though. And a dirty martini. Okay, maybe not in that order!

Tune into the QVC FFANY 'Shoes on Sale Event' on Oct. 10 from 6-9 p.m.
