Will Game of Thrones Have a Happy Ending?

Fans of Game of Thrones are used to heartbreak by this point. The death of Ned Stark, Dany losing her husband and baby, and now the awful-beyond-description Red Wedding, have all served to remind us that watching this show could be considered a form of self-mutilation. But how will it all end? Does everyone die? (probably) Will they all live happily ever after? (probably not) Will Tyrion, Dany and Arya decide they’re the coolest characters and just form their own kingdom? (if only)

Only one man knows the answer for sure: the author of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R.R. Martin. Martin was interviewed recently by EW about the Red Wedding, and the interviewer managed to sneak in a question asking if fans should expect the story to have a happy ending. Here’s Martin’s answer: “I’ve stated numerous times that I anticipate a bittersweet ending”.

So there it is, folks. It definitely doesn’t sound like it’s going to be a traditional happy ending by any means, but fans of the books (or the show) shouldn’t be expecting that anyway. He also didn’t say it’s going to be tragic, so we have to assume that some assemblance of a protagonist will make it out with his or her life intact. He said it’s going to be bittersweet. That’s not so bad, right? Chocolate chips are bittersweet, and they’re great! We should be able to make do just fine with a bittersweet ending, just as long as there actually is a little sweet mixed in with the bitter!

Do you think Game of Thrones could have a happy ending? Sound off in the comments!
