Everything We Learn in the ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 Episode 2 Promo
Before we could even catch our breath after that Game of Thrones Season 7 premiere last night, HBO aired the promo for Episode 2.
Impressively, that July 23 installment, “Stormborn,” looks even more action-packed than the premiere.
And as you might glean from that episode title, everyone’s talking about Daenerys…
The promo starts with Lord Yohn Royce, Lord of Runestone, warning Jon about this Breaker of Chains.
“A Targaryen cannot be trusted,” he says.
Clearly the news of Dany’s arrival at Dragonstone has made the rounds… but little does Yohn know that Jon himself is half-Targaryen. The irony!
Cersei also has Dany on her mind, telling her minions, “The Mad King’s daughter will destroy the realm.”
A little refresher on Westeros history: Dany’s father is King Aerys II Targaryen, who did indeed have the unflattering nickname of “the Mad King.”
The dude started off as a benevolent ruler but soon succumbed to “Targaryen madness” — a side-effect of the family’s inbreeding — and became a psychopathic despot prone to extreme cruelty and violence. (Until, that is, Jaime “Kingslayer” Lannister killed him.)
Yara, for one, is proposing swift and immediate action. “We have an army, a fleet, and three dragons,” she says. “We should hit King’s Landing Now.”
Next we see two brief shots that make it seem like Arya is coming face-to-face with Nymeria.
No, not that Nymeria. We’re talking about Nymeria the direwolf, Arya’s old pup. Arya sent her away from Winterfell back in Season 1 after she bit Joffrey to defend her owner.
If that is Nymeria we’re seeing, they’re reunited and it feels so good, right? Not quite. The dog is snarling and barking at Arya, it seems.
We also get a brief glimpse of Yara and Ellaria kissing, which is probably one of the “surprising hookups” co-showrunner David Benioff told TV Guide about earlier this month, though we hope Ellaria isn’t wearing her poison lips again.
These gals also seem to be canoodling below decks, so perhaps Dany did indeed send her on a naval mission.
We also see shots of Littlefinger being choked (probably by Jon, given what we saw in prior promos), Varys conversing with Dany, Sansa gazing out into the distance, and soldiers riding out of Winterfell.
And we see a Sand Snake — Tyene, we think! — attacking someone with a blade, and it looks like she’s on the same boat as Yara and Ellaria.
Here’s the promo in its entirety. What do you think it all means? Did we miss any detail? Let us know in the comments below!
Game of Thrones Season 7 airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
