‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 Premiere Didn’t Keep This Tormund-Brienne Scene

Tormund Giantsbane has been thirsty for Brienne of Tarth ever since he first saw her last season on Game of Thrones.

And though his feelings are most certainly not requited, his attempts to impress her are never not hilarious.

Unfortunately for us, a riotous conversation between the two characters was scripted but nixed from the Season 7 premiere

In the version that aired, Tormund momentarily distracts Brienne as she spars with Podrick in the Winterfell courtyard, and Podrick seizes an opportunity to strike her. Unswayed, Brienne punches Podrick in the gut and pushes him to the ground.

“You’re a lucky man,” Tormund tells Podrick, before casting a weighty glance at Brienne, who — exasperated by yet another Tormund come-on — turns away.

Speaking of unwanted attention, Littlefinger worms his way into a conversation with Sansa on the walkway overhead by telling her Brienne beat the Hound in single combat.

While Sansa and Littlefinger are watching, though, Brienne and Tormund are conversing — and it’s there that the convo happened, as director Jeremy Podeswa tells Insider.

“There was a little bit of improvisation there, because Sansa and Littlefinger are watching them from up on the walkway, and so we just shot [Tormund and Brienne] ad-libbing a bunch of conversations down below,” he says.

“There is one thing that they scripted and they riffed on that, which is Tormund says something about his relationship with Sheila the Bear,” the director continues.

“And nobody knows what that means or what that’s all about, so that’s meant to make Brienne look at him askance.

“He’s either trying to shock her or he’s just oblivious that he’s saying something that’s crazy.”

Don’t remember good ol’ Sheila? You can be forgiven — we last heard about her in Season 4 Episode 9, as Tormund talked to Ygritte about “his” Sheila.

“Oh, that was a night to remember,” he said.

“Of course, I’d had a good bit to drink. The fangs were sharp, but she knew how to use them.

“And she was nice and soft down below. No, she was no ordinary beast.”

Some fans think Tormund was referring to Lady Maege Mormont — erstwhile head of House Mormont, mother of Lyanna Mormont, sister of Jeor Mormont, and aunt of Jorah Mormont — who was known as “She-Bear.”

Anyway, Ygritte didn’t believe this “bear” with whom Tormund had sexual relations wasn’t actually ursine.

“I know you never f—ked a bear,” she said. “You know you never f—ked a bear. Right now I don't wanna think about the bear you never f—ked.”

Brienne, of course, had her own encounter with a bear, but it was anything but loving.

In Season 3, she had to fight a bear in a Harrenhal gladiator pit for the amusement of House Bolton master-at-arms Locke.

Luckily for her, Jaime — a man for whom she might actually have feelings, unlike Tormund — helped her escape from the pit.

And luckily for actors Gwendoline Christie and Kristofer Hivju, they get along much better off-screen than they do on-screen.

“They just have fun playing it,” Jeremy said.

“So there’s really not a lot of work [for me to do] to have those scenes be as fun and loaded as they are, because they just naturally have this great chemistry.

“The fans really enjoy that flirtation and fun between them, and they have a really good time playing that up. For fans of the show, I think those moments are really great.”

As Season 7 progresses, Tormund will still lust after Brienne, we imagine… and Kristofer will still be shipping them, as he did with the help of figurines in this Instagram video!

Game of Thrones Season 7 airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
