Gwendoline Christie caught viewers' interest the moment she appeared on Game of Thrones as the hulking Brienne of Tarth, and she's had a real chance to shine on Season 3. Brienne's story with Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) has been the highlight of the season, and many fans have found themselves unexpectedly rooting for this pair to turn romantic. But could that happen? In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gwendoline delved into the complex, blossoming Jaime-Brienne relationship.
Gwendoline explained that, over the course of the season, and especially in the best bathtub scene of all time (yes, that's really how we think of it), Brienne has come to recognize Jaime's "humanity." Gwendoline added that this re-evaluation of Jaime is also part of Brienne's general growth; she's starting to understand the world is not all "black and white." That's why she called him "Ser Jaime" in their memorable goodbye — "in that moment, she recognizes him as a man rather than a monster."
Be still, our Jaime/Brienne loving hearts.
However, those of you who want to see Jaime and Brienne be more than travel buddies shouldn't get your hopes up. When asked about the possibility of a Jaime/Brienne romance. Gwendoline pointed out that the world of Game of Thrones is "never straightforward."
Plus, she kind of likes Jaime and Brienne's relationship as it is — "I think it makes us examine a lot of possibilities and angles of what love is." On the other hand, she also acknowledged that "we all want to see the impossible actually happen, to see these two extraordinary characters reach that amazing stage."
Do you think Jaime and Brienne should get together romantically? Could it ever happen in the Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire world? Sound off in the comments below!
