From the outside, Alfie Allen doesn’t appear to be having a great time playing Theon Greyjoy on Game of Thrones Season 3, but looks can be deceiving. In fact, according to Alfie Allen, this season has actually been a great experience.

Alfie recently told The Independent that working on Season 3, “was brilliant," adding that "it was really, really great to be working with a new actor who comes into my storyline and he was just fantastic.”

It sounds like Alfie really loved working with Iwan Rheon, who plays his still unnamed torturer (who we’re pretty certain is Ramsay Snow). “He’s fantastic and the boy is a very great character,” he said. We can probably assume that in this context the word “great” really means “sadistic!”

That’s not to say that it’s been a walk in the park for Alfie. Those torture scenes are still difficult to shoot: “It was hard at times, it was very, very hard and isolated and lonely but that’s what the character’s meant to feel like,” revealed Alfie, “All the environment was set up for me to go through those emotions and being tied to that cross was not comfortable.”

Pretty much everyone hates Theon, and with good reason, but has any of that hatred spilled over into real life for Alfie? Not really: “I was walking down Oxford Street two days ago and gauged how big the show is. About every 30 metres I walked someone was like ‘I love Game of Thrones, man’. So I’ve not had anything bad.” Nice to know that no one on the street has tried to flay Alfie’s pinky!
