By now, you may have heard that Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley) bites the dust in Season 3, Episode 9 of Game of Thrones (“The Rains of Castamere”). But is the Stark matriarch really dead?

If GoT follows the major plot developments of the A Song of Fire and Ice book series — which it generally does — then Cat lives on...sort of.

As fans of the books know, Catelyn Stark is killed at the Red Wedding, the Frey massacre of King Robb Stark and his compatriots at the wedding of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey. Cat’s body is dumped in a nearby river and found by the Brotherhood Without Banners three days later.

But it is not over for Catelyn! Lord Beric trades his life for her’s, and she comes back as the vengeful, wraith-like Lady Stoneheart. Though Catelyn technically survives, she is not the same compassionate mother and woman she once was. Lady Stoneheart is a stone cold killer, intent on making the world pay for the deaths of her family members (and she has a broad definition of who falls into that category). Watch out, Westeros! Lady Stoneheart will soon be on the prowl.

Are you glad Catelyn comes back? Are you looking forward to meeting Lady Stoneheart? Let us know in the comments below!
