Fans of the A Song of Fire and Ice book series have been dreading the Red Wedding since the beginning of the television adaptation of Game of Thrones. In tonight’s episode, Season 3, Episode 9: “The Rains of Castamere,” the tragic scene finally aired, and we saw the massacre of the bannermen of the North and the death of King of the North, Robb Stark (Richard Madden).

In as in the A Storm of Swords books, the Frey betrayal happens at the wedding of Edmure Tully to the daughter of Walder Frey, Roslin. After the ceremony, the band starts playing “The Rains of Castamere” — the Lannister fight song — signalling the start of the attack and the end of Robb Stark.

Robb is immediately shot by a number of crossbow arrows, loosed by the sellswords and knights disguised as wedding musicians. With the attack, Walder Frey has broken the guest right, the sacred tradition sealed with food and drink that promises safety when a guest in another’s home. Apparently, Walder’s still upset that Robb ditched his daughter to marry Talisa Maegyr. Hope the honeymoon was worth it, Robb.

Catelyn, however, still has her wits about her. She puts a knife to the neck of one of Walder’s wife in an attempt to negotiate for her wounded son’s life. (Have we mentioned she’s a badass?). Unfortunately, Walder’s unmoved. Roose Bolton, who is of course involved in the betrayal, finishes Robb off with a stab to the heart. R.I.P., Robb. We’ll always have those brief, happy moments in Winterfell.
