Bad news bears...or, you know, direwolves, Game of Thrones fans. The Red Wedding just ripped out our hearts and left us emotionally wrecked. In Season 3, Episode 9: “The Rains of Castamere,” we saw the slaughter of King Robb Stark’s forces and the death of yet another beloved character: Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley).
How does the massacre go down? Well, it was orchestrated by Walder Frey, who is obviously not over Robb’s choice to ditch his arranged marriage to a Frey daughter in favor of his newfound lady love, Talisa Maegyr. Walder lures Robb, Catelyn, and the bannerman of the North in for the consolation marriage between Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey, but all is not what it seems. With the signal of the Lannister fighting song, “The Rains of Castamere,” Robb is crossbowed and his drunken bannermen easily overpowered by Frey forces.
Catelyn manages to get her knife to the neck of a Frey grandson in an attempt to negotiate for the life of her dying son, but Walder is unfazed. Robb is killed by Roose Bolton, and Catelyn’s throat is slit (though not before she takes the aforementioned grandson out). Then, her naked body is dumped in the river, mocking the Tully funeral ritual. Not cool, Freys. Not cool.
