Readers of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series, on which Game of Thrones is based, are very aware that the show is moving at a faster pace than the books, but have no fear, series author George R.R. Martin is also quite aware of this problem.

Martin paid a visit to Conan last night, and during the interview he discussed the prospect of the show catching up to the books. Martin is currently working on his sixth book (out of an eventual seven) in the series, and he states, “I’m writing very fast because my great fear is that [GoT showrunners] David and Dan will catch up with me... It took me six years to do the last book and they do a season a year, so they’re moving like a freight train.” Gulp.

Martin also mentioned the possibility of the show having a different ending than the book series, due in part to the prospect of the show finishing first. When Conan asks if Martin knows the ending, Martin reveals, “I know how it all ends... Of course there’s no guaranteeing that the show will end the same way... Hopefully it will end the same way in the TV show as it does in the books, but we’ll see.” Two different endings for Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire? If that happens, we may need a movie series to sort it all out!
