Still recovering from the Game of Thrones Season 3 finale (Season 3, Episode 10: "Mhysa")? Maybe this will help: HBO has released a new video wherein showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss discuss the inner workings of “Mhysa.”

On Tywin Lannister. Tywin was the true mastermind behind the Red Wedding, and Benioff and Weiss discuss his motives here. Weiss states, “From his perspective, Tywin ended a war that was going to cause both sides untold suffering and countless lives.” Regarding the scene where Tywin reveals to Tyrion that he wanted to kill him when he was born because he is a dwarf, Benioff says, “Tywin is a man of great pride and I think every time he sees Tyrion it’s an affront to his pride.”

On Roose Bolton. In case it wasn’t obvious that the new Warden of the North is one of the least trustworthy people in all of Westeros, Benioff says, “Roose is the kind of man who will be loyal to you as long as it’s good for him to be loyal to you.” He adds, “As soon as Roose starts to believe that Robb’s not going to win this war he starts to look for an escape plan.”

On Theon Greyjoy. Theon has been tortured all season, and the writers have finally confirmed that the identity of his assailant is Roose Bolton’s bastard, Ramsay. Weiss reveals why they kept this secret all season: “We really wanted the viewer to be in it with Theon and to not have any idea what was going on, we want people to be confused and to be asking the same questions Theon is asking.”

On Daenerys Targaryen. The end of the episode featured the powerful image of Dany freeing the slaves of Yunkai, as they swarm her and call her “mother,” showing how her influence in the world is growing. Weiss says, “It seemed like it was really important to let us know just how many people were counting on her... the tens of thousands of people who flooded out of the gates to pay tribute to her.”
