The first major casting news of Game of Thrones Season 4 has hit the interwebs, and it's a doozy: The show has found its Oberyn Martell, AKA the Red Viper. Who's the lucky actor selected for this fan-fave role? Entertainment Weekly reports that the part has gone to Pedro Pascal.
Oberyn, a dashing, handsome, and indisputably badass prince of Dorne is one of A Song of Ice and Fire's most memorable characters, and fans have been debating for years about who should play that part. Chilean actor Pedro Pascal was not a common name on wish lists, but it sounds like the showrunners put a lot of thought into picking the perfect Viper.
"This was a tough one," showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss told Entertainment Weekly. "The Red Viper is sexy and charming, yet believably dangerous; intensely likable, yet driven by hate ... We found a fellow who can handle the job description and make it seem effortless. He wasn’t easy to find and he won’t be easy to stop."
Given the show's stellar track record with casting, we'll trust them on this one. Pedro has previously appeared in arcs on The Good Wife, Red Widow, Graceland, and Lights Out. Find out more about him here. And if you want to know more about who exactly this Red Viper character is, we've got a semi-spoilery rundown based on the books here.
