As any fan of Game of Thrones knows, no character is safe. Main characters can die at a moment’s notice, no matter how popular they are amongst fans. So, should we be worried about the fate of the legitimate heir to the Baratheon throne, Stannis, in Season 4? The A Song of Ice and Fire book series provides the likely answer.

Let’s face it, Stannis doesn’t have a ton of fans. His claim to the throne may be the best of all the contenders, but is anyone really rooting for the guy? We mean, he’s just so boring, and no one really thinks he’s going to end up on the throne, do they? So the show’s probably going to get rid of him next season so we can all just focus on Dany and Jon Snow, right?

Maybe not. Next season, Stannis becomes awesome. While the Night’s Watch is getting thoroughly manhandled by Mance Rayder and his wildling army, Stannis shows up out of nowhere with his own troops and proceeds to lay waste to the free folk. He captures Mance and moves into Castle Black, where he basically makes the Night’s Watch choose a new leader, who ends up being none other than Jon Snow. Stannis does the unthinkable and ends up becoming likable, so once we get attached, does that mean the show’s going to kill him off?

Nope. At least not next season. Based on the books, Stannis is going to live through all of the crazy stuff that goes down in Season 4 and will make it to Season 5, where we also expect him to survive. After that, though, Stannis’s future is a little murky. The most recent book in A Song of Ice and Fire ends in a Stannis-related cliffhanger, with Ramsay Bolton claiming to have killed him, but Ramsay could be lying (he’s not a terribly trustworthy guy). It will be a while before the show reaches this point, so for now let’s all enjoy Stannis as he actually becomes a character we care about!
