With Game of Thrones Season 3 a distant memory, it’s now time to turn our attention to what may lie ahead in Season 4. Since GoT is based on the book series A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF), we can make some good guesses about how the story will play out next season, at least in broad strokes. Here are our predictions about what's coming up for Robert Baratheon’s bastard, Gendry, based on the latter half of A Storm of Swords.

Warning: This article contains MAJOR spoilers from the A Song of Ice and Fire book series. Click away now if you don't want to know!

Disclaimer: Of course, the show may cut plot elements or even completely alter Gendry's story. These are spoilers based on the books only.

Note: Gendry’s story has probably been altered more than any other character on the show. In the books, he never meets Stannis or Melisandre. That storyline used a different bastard of Robert’s, Edric Storm, who has been omitted from the show. The following are two separate predictions, one based on what happens to Gendry in the books, and one based on what happens to Edric Storm, since the show has combined their roles.

What happens to Gendry. In the books, Gendry never leaves the Brotherhood Without Banners. On the contrary, he becomes one of their more influential members, putting his strength to good use. Beric Dondarrion knights Gendry, and from that point on he’s known as Ser Gendry. Eventually, he and the Brotherhood run into Brienne, and he saves her life from Biter after she kills Rorge. We find it hard to believe Gendry’s going to go back to the Brotherhood after they unceremoniously sold him in the show, but he may feel that he simply has nowhere else to go. We do know that Rorge is returning next season, so maybe we’ll get the meeting between Brienne and Gendry after all.

What happens to Edric Storm. Not much. In the books, Davos rescues Edric from Melisandre and sends him off in a boat (sound familiar?). He actually sends him to the free cities of Essos, where Edric goes into hiding. The last time we saw Gendry on the show, he was paddling away in his boat. Might he end up in the free cities of Essos like Edric? It will be an interesting development if he does, since that’s where his old pal Arya’s going to end up. Might a Gendry/Arya reunion be in the cards next season? We hope so!
