Game of Thrones has several new characters on tap for Season 4, as well as a few old characters getting a fresh look with new actors, and we’re wondering which newbie fills the shoes best of his or her A Song of Ice and Fire counterpart best. Here are the ones we’re looking forward to the most.

Pedro Pascal as The Red Viper, Oberyn Martell. Playing perhaps the most anticipated new character of Season 4, Pedro received some backlash from fans who feel he wasn’t the right choice to portray the swaggering Dornishman, but we disagree. While Pedro may not have as dark a complexion as many pictured Oberyn having in the books, he still has passable Mediterranean-looking features, which George R. R. Martin claims is the appropriate appearance for the Dornish people. Plus, the showrunners insist he’s the right guy for the job, and given their history, that’s enough for us.

Roger Ashton-Griffiths as Mace Tyrell. The Mace of the books is a little portly, somewhat ineffectual, and in no way threatening. Check, check and check. Roger nails this look perfectly, looking every bit like the patriarch of a family striving for greatness but never quite knowing how to achieve it. Roger looks like he can pull off the bumbling act while still maintaining his delusions of control, making him a perfect fit for Mace.

Indira Varma as Ellaria Sand. While Ellaria doesn’t have much to do in the books, Indira is an accomplished actress, so we’re hoping the show finds some more plot for her. Indira pulls off Ellaria’s beauty and exoticness with ease (face it, no one else on the show comes close to her look), and she also has the screen presence to really turn Ellaria into a special character. Here’s hoping we have a new fan-favorite by next season’s end.

Michiel Huisman as Daario Naharis. One of the new faces playing an old character next season, Michiel is unique in that he’s portraying a character whom we just saw in Season 3 (other recasts are for characters not seen since Season 2 or earlier). Luckily for Michiel, we think he may be a more appropriate Daario than his predecessor. While he’s unlikely to sport the blue hair and three-pronged beard of the Daario of the books, Michiel at least looks like he could actually be a sellsword, rather than just a pretty face. Michiel also has a masculinity about him that should prove effective in the role. Now we’ll just have to see what his chemistry is going to be like with Daenerys.

Thor Bjornsson as The Mountain. The third actor to portray the elder Clegane brother, Thor is also probably the most intimidating. He’s literally one of the strongest men in the world, having won Iceland’s Strongest Man title two years in a row. He’s also just an absolute monster, standing 6’9” and weighing over 400 lbs. The Mountain only needs to be two things: Big and scary, and Thor is both and then some.
