As any fan of Game of Thrones knows, no character is safe. Main characters can die at a moment’s notice, no matter how popular they are amongst fans. So, should we be worried about the fate of the King Beyond the Wall, Mance Rayder, in Season 4? The A Song of Ice and Fire book series provides the likely answer.

We haven’t seen Mance Rayder in a little while, but he should be back in a big way next season. Assuming the show follows the books, all of the planning and power-grabbing he’s been working at for years will finally come to fruition in Season 4 when Mance leads the whole of his army in a full-on assault of the Wall. Will he survive the battle?

When Mance and his army attack the Wall, they’re not playing around. They plan on making it across even if it means knocking the thing down, and with giants at his disposal, Mance just might succeed. Meanwhile, the Night’s Watch is stretched incredibly thin, so as a strategy to end the war, de-facto head honcho Janos Slynt sends Jon Snow beyond the Wall to assassinate Mance. Is this the end of the King Beyond the Wall? While Jon isn’t crazy about the idea of killing Mance, he’ll probably be killed himself if he goes back to Slynt without doing the job. Right when things with Mance start to get dicey, Jon is saved the trouble when Stannis of all people shows up with an army and tears apart Mance’s forces. So does Stannis kill Mance?

No one’s killing Mance. Not yet, anyway. Stannis takes him into custody and proudly parades him around the Wall, with the plan being that Melisandre will sacrifice to the Lord of Light by burning him alive. Eventually, we will see Mance burned at the stake, probably in Season 5, but let’s just say that seeing isn’t always believing, and Mance may pop back up after his “demise.” That’s a long way off though, so for now, Mance is safe.
