As most people know by now, Game of Thrones is based on the A Song of Ice and Fire book series by George R. R. Martin. for fans of the series who are hoping for a new entry in the series soon, the author has a message for you: Relax.
Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Martin addresses his fans who are eager for the next entry in the series, saying, “It is great that so many people are eager for the next book and certainly these are the people who are paying my bills and allowing me to have a house across the street from my other house, but at the same time, sometimes I just wish they would stop pressuring me about it. It will be done when it's done. I'm working on it. I don't know what else I can say: I'm a slow writer, I've always been a slow writer, and these are gigantic books.”
Boom. Basically, it will be finished when it’s finished.
Now that it’s clear that Martin isn’t giving a timetable for when we should expect the next book in the series, we can at least take comfort in the fact that there are only two books left for him to write out of his planned seven, right? Um, not so fast. Martin goes on to say, “I think it will be [finished] in seven books, but I've been wrong about that before.” OK, so the books are taking a long time to finish and they could potentially go on forever. Is there any good news?Martin does concede that the show is at least motivating him to write faster, stating, “As the show comes closer and closer, I need to go faster and faster. I have told [showrunners Benioff and Weiss] some of where I am going, so I think they know the ultimate destination, but I have to not allow them to catch me.” Alright, he has his motivation, so we can all leave him alone.
Though, if we could make just one request: Write like the wind, George R. R. Martin. Write like the wind.
