Readers of A Song of Ice and Fire, the book series upon which Game of Thrones is based, know that Daenerys Targaryen isn’t any closer to Westeros than she was at the beginning of the series. After five mammoth books, Dany is geographically further away from Westeros now than when the series began. So we have to wonder: will she ever make it back to Westeros to claim her birthright?

In A Game of Thrones, Dany begins her journey in the Free City of Pentos, which is just across the narrow sea from Westeros. From there, she ventures across the vast Dothraki Sea (which is actually plains, not water — stay with us) until Khal Drogo’s passing, at which point she wanders across the Red Waste (giant desert) until she makes it to Qarth, which if you look at this map, is really, really far from Westeros.

From Qarth, Dany sails West to Slaver’s Bay, where she conquers the cities of Astapor, Yunkai (where she currently is on the TV show), and Mereen. She settles down in Mereen, becomes queen, and takes a husband. Not exactly the behavior of someone in a hurry to get to Westeros. Her domestic life is shattered, however, when her own city is attacked by Drogon, her largest and fiercest dragon, and she rides away on him back to the Dothraki Sea. Though most in Mereen presume she is dead, she is still alive. When we last see her, she has been discovered by her old foe Khal Jhaqo and his Khalasar.

Now, with two books remaining (at least), where does Dany go from here? We have to assume she makes it to Westeros at some point, since her storyline has been very separate from all of the other characters in the series. If she ends up being a red herring and dies before reaching Westeros or just stays in Essos forever, then George R. R. Martin will go down as the biggest troll in history. Seriously, while her story has been entertaining, it will all be for naught if Dany doesn’t make it to Westeros and run into some Starks and Lannisters.

One of the more popular theories at this point is that Dany will hook up with Jon Snow and the two will rule together. Fire and Ice, dragons and snow, all that. There’s also a popular theory that Jon Snow’s real parents are Ned Stark’s sister Lyanna and Dany’s brother Rhaegar. If this is the case, then Jon Snow is Dany’s nephew, meaning a relationship between the two would be quite taboo, even for a Targaryen.

Then there’s the immediate threat of Khal Jhaqo. Will he kill Dany outright? Will he recognize Dany’s power because of her dragon and follow her? We just don’t know, but what we do know is this: Dany still has a long, long way to go before she reaches Westeros. Let’s just hope she gets there eventually.

What do you think? Will Dany ever make it to Westeros to claim the Iron Throne? Sound off in the comments!
