As any fan of Game of Thrones knows, no character is safe. Main characters can die at a moment’s notice, no matter how popular they are amongst fans. So, should we be worried about the fate of one of the toughest guys in Westeros, The Hound, in Season 4? The A Song of Ice and Fire book series provides the likely answer.

The last time we saw the Hound, he was helping Arya slay a few good-for-nothing Freys, but will his violent ways finally catch up to him in Season 4? Based on the books, we think the Hound’s next move is to attempt to bring Arya to her aunt Lysa in the Vale to ransom her off. While Lysa is crazy and doesn’t even really know Arya, most of the rest of Arya’s family is dead, so the Hound doesn’t really have any other options.

Unfortunately for the Hound, he’s not going to make it to the Vale. With the war going on and the hill tribes roaming around with improved weapons (thanks, Tyrion), the road to the Vale is far too dangerous to traverse, even for the Hound. So with the Lysa option off the table, the Hound does the next best thing: He drinks.

The Hound gets really drunk in a bar, seeing no better option given his current situation of being unemployed, an outlaw, and having a prisoner that he can’t ransome to anyone. While getting loaded in a bar, the Hound comes across a few of his brother’s men, who decide to start a rumble. The Hound kills the men, with some help from Arya, but he suffers some pretty nasty wounds.

While traveling, the Hound essentially gives up on life. His wound is getting worse, and he doesn’t have much of a will to live. He asks Arya to kill him, to put him out of his misery, but she refuses, electing instead to let him suffer and leaving him to die. His fate remains unknown, with conflicting evidence in the books on whether he lives or dies. While we don’t expect anything concrete next season, we assume the last we’ll see of the Hound in Season 4 is him being left for dead. Let’s hope he survives.
