Game of Thrones fans know Rory McCann best as the disfigured brute Sandor Clegane, AKA the Hound, but, much like on the show, there’s a lot going on under the surface. Here are five facts about Rory that even the most ardent GoT fan might not know.

1. He’s a giant IRL. The Hound is one of the most imposing forces in Westeros, but it’s not due to camera tricks. Rory stands an impressive 6’6” in real life!

2. He’s on a boat. Rory considers his home to be his boat, since that’s where he spends most of his free time. He tells The Guardian, “Home for me is my boat, really ... I'm in the process of replacing all the rigging, so soon I'll be able to get out there and do some real high-seas sailing.” Hmm, are we sure the Hound doesn’t have any Greyjoy blood in him?

3. He hitchhiked his way into acting. Rory landed his first acting role completely by accident. He was hitchhiking through Wales when he came by an audition for the classic '80s fantasy film Willow and, naturally, secured a role.

4. He is the Hound. Rory is Scottish, and he tells Hero Complex an interesting tidbit about the origin of his surname, “You know, my name McCann actually translates from ‘canis,’ or ‘canine.’ I am a hound.”

5. He has a secret language with his sister. Rory’s sister is a costume designer, and she has worked together with her brother on a few of his projects. The two of them are very close, and they having a way of keeping things between just the two of them, as Rory tells The Scotsman, “On set, we speak a secret language from childhood, so none of the other actors or directors know what we're talking about. It's very useful when you don't want others to know what you're saying.”
