Just in case Game of Thrones didn’t already feature enough families battling for the Iron Throne, another major player is going to be introduced next season: House Martell.

So who are the Martells? We've got the

First, a little history. House Targaryen originally held dominion over all of the Seven Kingdoms before Robert’s Rebellion, but just whom were they in charge of? The Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and their ruling families as we know them are: The North, ruled by House Stark; The Rock, House Lannister; The Mountain and the Vale, House Arryn; The Stormlands, House Baratheon; The Reach, House Tyrell; The Isles and Rivers, split amongst House Greyjoy and House Tully; and Dorne, which is ruled by, you guessed it, House Martell.

Dorne is the southernmost kingdom in Westeros, and is known for being different both culturally and geographically from their northern neighbors. In A Song of Ice and Fire, Dorne features deserts, olive-skinned peoples, and food featuring spicy Dornish peppers, so yeah, pretty different from the very-British rest of Westeros. The ruling Martell family also holds the distinction of being the only one of the Seven Kingdoms to have never been defeated by the Targaryens; they joined the realm through marriage rather than defeat. Therefore, the slogan for House Martell is “Unbowed, unbent, unbroken,” which is undeniably awesome.

The Martells are also the only one of Westeros’s Great Houses to pass power on to the eldest heir regardless of gender, so a woman can rule Dorne without having to answer to any man. Also, the Martells are traditionally known as “prince” and “princess” rather than “lord” or “lady,” because it’s so much cooler that way.

For any Lannister-haters out there who are fed up with the Starks’ ineptitude for revenge, fret not, for the Martells hate the Lannisters at least as much as the Starks, maybe more, since their beef with the richest family in Westeros goes back decades. During Robert’s Rebellion, Rhaegar Targaryen’s wife, Elia Martell, and their two children were murdered on the orders of Tywin Lannister. Elia was the sister of Prince Oberyn Martell, whom we’ll get to meet in Season 4 when he comes to King’s Landing with revenge on his mind. Though he’s probably the only Martell we’ll meet in Season 4, keep your eyes peeled for more of the Dornish royal family in the future because their importance increases as the story progresses.
