Let’s be honest, the main reason people watched last night’s Super Bowl wasn’t to watch a good football game or to see a bunch of celebrity-endorsed beer commercials; it was to catch a glimpse of Game of Thrones star Kit Harington’s upcoming blockbuster, Pompeii.

Ok, maybe people had other reasons for watching the game, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that a 30 second trailer for the new sword and sandals epic made its debut last night and was without question more exciting than what was happening on the field.

Looking somewhat like a cross between the films Gladiator and Dante’s Peak, the trailer features a very buff Jon Snow, err, Kit Harington, kicking all sorts of butt in an Ancient Roman gladiator ring in Pompeii when Mount Vesuvius erupts, leading to a frantic race for survival. The film looks to be action-packed, with lots of fight scenes and some impressive volcano-related special effects.

The film also seems to have a strong emotional core, framing the real-life disaster at Pompeii as an opportunity for freedom for enslaved gladiators such as the one Kit is portraying. The film opens February 21 in 3D, in what looks to be a very exciting use of the format.

In case you missed it, or if you just want to see it again, you can check out the trailer below.
