More and more stars of HBO’s Game of Thrones have been popping up in movies lately, the latest being Kit Harington in Pompeii, which opens next week. So with the show’s stars clearly set to conquer Hollywood, does that mean we should expect a Game of Thrones movie?

“I think it’s an option on the table, maybe,” Kit tells Variety. “It’s very filmic in its style already, so it’s possible.” A Game of Thrones movie? Could it be?

The idea isn’t as farfetched as it may seem. With the show breathing down the back of George R. R. Martin’s neck and threatening to surpass his A Song of Ice and Fire book series, the show could be looking for ways to give Martin more time to write, and taking a season off to make a film would do just that, since a two or even three hour movie is going to cover a lot less plot than a ten episode season.

The main argument against a GoT movie has always been that there are too many characters and the plot is too complicated for a movie to do the material justice. While we agree, the show now has three, and soon to be four, seasons under its belt where the audience has gotten to know the characters and the plot. So if a movie premiered between seasons that focused on an exciting plotline and advanced the overall story just a little, it may be a great addition to the series. And this sort of thing has happened before in television: The X-Files did it with The X-Files movie, which aired between that show’s 5th and 6th seasons, respectively, and bridged the gap between seasons.

While we haven’t heard any serious chatter about a GoT movie, the prospect is definitely something that has us intrigued.
