The Game of Thrones Season 4 premiere (Season 4, Episode 1, "Two Swords") opened with a chilling scene showing Tywin melting down a sword as "The Rains of Castamere" played in the background. It was a dramatic way to kick of the season, but it wasn't quite explained.

In the second season of the episode, Tywin gave Jaime one of the swords. We learned that it was made of Valyrian steel, which, if you recall, is both rare and incredibly strong. Tywin cryptically said that the original sword belonged to someone who didn't need it anymore. Who was that someone?

Why, Ned Stark! You might remember Ned's iconic broadsword, called Ice, from the first season. It's the sword he memorably used to execute a Night's Watch runaway. And it is the sword Tywin just destroyed.

Obviously, Tywin was doing more than repurposing some valuable metal. Melting down Ice and claiming its metal for their own is yet another way the Lannisters are asserting dominance over the Stars after decimating the House and their followers at the Red Wedding.
