Another Game of Thrones premiere, another piracy record shattered. The season premiere of Game of Thrones Season 4 was illegally downloaded by over 1 million people in just half a day, according to Torrent Freak.
This demolishes the record previously held by Game of Thrones Season 3 finale, where it took 24 hours to reach one million downloads. This season’s premiere seems to be twice as popular with pirates as last season’s finale was, with a peak rate of 300,000 users simultaneously sharing files for the premiere compared to a top rate of 170,000 for last season’s finale.
While the show’s ever-increasing popularity is certainly a main factor in the increase in online interest, the big jump in numbers could also be influenced by the fact that HBOGO, HBO’s online viewing site and app, crashed due to demand and was offline for several hours after the premiere aired, likely driving some of those who would normally watch the show legally to seek other avenues for their Westeros fix.
This is the third straight year that Game of Thrones has held the title of the most-pirated show on television, which is both a dubious distinction and also a testament to the show’s wild popularity, so as long as people are watching, we feel like HBO is probably pleased.
