Disclaimer: While we know what happens to Theon in the books, the show could very well change his storyline. They already have in a couple of big ways: One, Roose Bolton does not send anyone to find Bran and Rickon in the books, in fact, he’s unaware they’re alive. Two, Theon’s sister does not mount a rescue mission to find him in the books. OK, now that that’s out of the way, here’s what happens in the books.

Theon is sent by Ramsay to Moat Cailin, which is the last Ironborn stronghold in the North. Theon is instructed to tell the soldiers there to surrender, since they don’t stand a chance against the Bolton-led, and Frey-enhanced, North. The soldiers agree and surrender willingly, only to be flayed alive by Ramsay. Next, the Northern lords and the Freys all meet with the Boltons at Winterfell, where Ramsay is set to marry Arya Stark. However, it’s not the real Arya, just a Northern girl being passed off as her. No one knows this except for Theon, who watched Arya grow up, but he keeps his mouth shut and even gives the girl away at the wedding due to his connection to the Stark family.

After the wedding, while everyone is still at Winterfell, Bolton and Frey soldiers start being killed off. At first, Theon is blamed, before everyone realizes he’s too weak to kill anybody. Eventually, the Lords of the North start fighting amongst themselves which is exactly what the killer wants. Theon and fake-Arya are able to escape during the ensuing chaos, but they run right into Stannis Baratheon’s soldiers. Stannis is planning a march on Winterfell to unseat the Boltons, and he takes Theon as prisoner. Another prisoner of Stannis’ just happens to be Theon’s sister, and the two are reunited in one of the worst ways possible.
