One of the bigger plot threads we’re looking forward to in Game of Thrones Season 4 is the trial of Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage). In typical GoT fashion, there will be plenty of twists and turns, and if you’re wondering what we expect to happen, you’ve come to the right place!

Disclaimer: This is what happens in the books. The show can, and probably will, change things.

The people vs. Tyrion Lannister. During the trial, Cersei goes out of her way to make sure that everyone Tyrion knows testifies against him, mostly acting as character witnesses to paint a portrait of him as someone who had an antagonistic history with Joffrey. The biggest disappointment for Tyrion is the testimony of Shae, who makes a mockery of their relationship after being paid off by Cersei. In the show, it still seems more likely to us that Cersei/Tywin will have Shae killed rather than involving her in the trial, but we’ll see. Maybe Shae will testify against Tyrion out of hurt?

Trial by combat. Once it becomes very clear that Tyrion is going to lose the trial, he is paid a visit by Oberyn Martell. Tyrion’s only shot at being found not guilty is a trial by combat (hey, it worked at the Eyrie) and Oberyn volunteers to fight on Tyrion’s behalf. Why on earth would he do this? Because he would be fighting the Mountain, and Oberyn is desperate to gain his revenge on the elder Clegane.

Oberyn loses. During the battle, Oberyn is destroying the Mountain, but he becomes too obsessed with obtaining a confession regarding his sister Elia during the fight. He eventually lets his guard down and the Mountain wins, though he himself dies later from his wounds.

Tyrion escapes. After battle, Tyrion is freed from his cell by Jaime and Varys. In the books, Jaime tells Tyrion the truth about his first wife, Tysha, that she really did love him and Tywin made Jaime make up the story about her being a whore. Again, we suspect the show may change this detail to involve Shae in some way given that the story of Tyrion’s first wife has barely been a factor on the show.

Tyrion becomes a murderer. Ironically, Tyrion becomes a murderer immediately following his trial in which he is falsely accused of murder. While being led out of the dungeons by Varys, they pass by a secret entrance to Tywin’s chambers. Tyrion is enraged because of what Jaime has just told him, so he goes to pay a visit to his father, finding a crossbow along the way. When he makes it to Tywin’s room, he finds Shae naked in his father’s bed and strangles her to death (again, the show may switch this up). He then locates his father on the toilet and murders him as well before fleeing King’s Landing with Varys.
