Before Kit Harington’s Rolling Stone interview and the Night’s Watch-level shade he threw Downton Abbey’s way, we had no idea the Game of Thrones crew was so hung up on the early 20th century period drama.

True, both have huge, varied casts and complicated storylines riddled with unexpected deaths. They’ve even shared cast members (Ygritte as a maid!) but we never figured the two shows paid much attention to one another. How wrong we were!

Gwendoline Christie, who plays Westeros’ resident Amazon Brienne of Tarth, chatted up the Radio Times and when quizzed as to which show’s cast, Downton or Thrones, would win in a fight, her answer was clear.

“I think that’s pretty obvious, isn’t it? For a start, we’ve been training on Game of Thrones for this kind of big showdown for nearly four years. And secondly, there’s only so much damage you can do with a tea tray.”

Them be fighting words, Gwen! We’ll agree that Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) probably isn’t as handy with a sword as say Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) but we know both can work a needle! And when it comes to verbal sparring, the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) could run circles around even the sharpest tongues in the Seven Kingdoms. Sorry not sorry, Lady Olenna.
