Game of Thrones’ ratings for Season 4 have been breaking ratings records left and right, but they aren’t the only records falling this season. Illegal downloads are also up for the show, with Episode 5 setting a new high mark for online piracy.

Torrent Freak, who keep track of this sort of thing, reports that 1.5 million people had already downloaded Episode 5 the day after it aired, which breaks the record the show had set only a few weeks ago. To put in perspective how much the show’s popularity has grown with online pirates, the most downloaded episode from Season 1 in 2011 was shared 3.4 million times — but it took a year to reach that number. The newest episode also saw over 200,000 people sharing a copy of the show simultaneously, which is the first time in history that that many people have shared the same file at the same time. Isn’t it great how Game of Thrones brings people together?

While HBO has previously been flattered by the online piracy of the show, considering it good for spreading its popularity, they may feel that enough is enough. The network has begun sending Google takedown requests relating to illegal copies of the show, but it remains to be seen what effect this will have on the online pirating community.
