On Game of Thrones, one of the more confusing relationships is the one between Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) and Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner). One minute it seems like Littlefinger thinks of Sansa as the daughter he never had, the next minute he’s making out with her hardcore. So how does Littlefinger really view Sansa?
It’s complicated, according to Aidan Gillen, who portrays Littlefinger. “I’d like to think there’s a certain amount of good-heartedness in there,” Aidan tells TV Guide of Littlefinger’s relationship with Sansa. “Her being Catelyn’s daughter, obviously I’d want to look out for her. But [there are] other self-serving reasons as well.”
When asked to put into words just what Littlefinger is to Sansa, Aidan goes the mentor route. “I think kind of a mentor,” Aidan says. “I think we’re also going to see that with Lysa’s son Robin Arryn as well. These two young people need some guidance, and I do put myself in that position. I traveled to the Eyrie with Sansa. She assumes this identity, this alias Alayne Stone. She likes it, she likes role playing. It’s more like a surrogate avuncular uncle-like relationship. I think a lot of this stuff is complicated.”
That’s for sure. We don’t know many uncle/mentors who make out with their niece/mentees!
