Readers of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series, upon which Game of Thrones is based, have become a worrisome bunch thanks to the prospect of the show catching up to and surpassing the books’ storyline sometime in the near future. The next book in the series, The Winds of Winter, has been a long time coming, but now, book fans are getting a glimmer of hope. Kind of.

A Song of Ice and Fire editor Anne Groell recently did an online Q & A for Suvudu Universe, and, not surprisingly, the first question she was asked was when The Winds of Winter (TWOW) will be released. Here’s what she had to say:

“For TWOW, when I have a date, you will have a date. I’m now on Twitter, Del Rey Spectra has a number of social media platforms, and I promise you we will put the word out as soon as we know. All I can say is that [writer] George [R.R. Martin] is hard at work, and we hope to have it reasonably soon. I currently have 168 pages that he submitted back in Feb 2013 in order to receive a contracted payment, but I know more exists, because he keeps talking about chapter he hasn’t yet sent me. In fact, when we wanted to put an exclusive excerpt on the A WORLD OF ICE AND FIRE app—a magnificent thing which you all should buy and use!—he suggested the second Tyrion chapter, which I then had to remind him was not in the sample I had.”

It sounds like Anne isn’t really sure what George is up to, yet she remains hopeful. Admittedly, the fact that she only has 168 pages of what’s likely a much, much longer book, and that she hasn’t received anything from George in 15 months, doesn’t sound like the most encouraging news, but who knows? Maybe George is going to spring the entire book on her in the coming weeks. Fingers crossed.
