George Martin’s editor recently stated in an online Q & A that Martin’s epic A Song of Ice and Fire book series — which HBO’s Game of Thrones is based on — could be stretched from the currently planned seven books to eight books. This is terrible news for anyone still holding onto a thin shred of hope that Martin will finish his story before the TV show does, since the author still hasn’t published the sixth book in the series. But is it true?
“My plan is to finish in seven,” Martin tells Entertainment Weekly, reassuring fans before dashing their hopes. “But my original plan was to finish in three. I write the stories and they grow. I deal with certain things and sometimes I find myself not at the end of a story. My plan right now is still seven. But first I have to finish Book Six. Get back to me when I’m halfway through Book Seven and then maybe I’ll tell you something more meaningful.”
Not to sound cynical, but it will probably be ten years before Martin’s halfway through Book Seven, and we feel like thanks to GoT, most fans will already know the ending by then. So come one, George, get writing!
