With all of the craziness that went on in Game of Thrones action-packed Season 4 finale, Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) perhaps the most unexpected result is that we know actually care about Stannis Baratheon! Stannis’ surprise attack on the Wildlings was awesome, but now that Stannis seems to have the support of the Night’s Watch, what’s going to happen next?

Moves in the North. So Stannis saved the day and captured Mance Rayder... now what? First, Stannis wants to use the goodwill he’s earned in the North. In the books, his first plan is to offer to legitimize Jon Snow as a Stark, making him Lord of Winterfell. In many ways, it’s what Jon always wanted, but Jon decides to be loyal to his Night’s Watch vows and is elected their new Lord Commander.

Stannis does win the support of the defeated Wildlings, whom he (and Jon Snow) lets cross the Wall in exchange for their fealty. Having little success winning over the Lords of the North, Jon counsels Stannis to seek the help from the mountain clans in the North, since no one ever pays attention to them. Stannis does, and with their support he takes the Ironborn-held Deepwood Motte, which wins more Northern Houses to his cause.

He also sends Davos to House Manderly to treat with Lord Wyman Manderly. Wyman tells Davos that Rickon Stark (remember him) is alive, and that if Davos can find him, he will support Stannis.

Marching against Winterfell. After Deepwood Motte, Stannis’ next move is to march on Winterfell against the Boltons and Freys, and during his march he captures Theon Greyjoy, who had finally escaped the clutches of Ramsay Bolton. The last we hear of Stannis, it is in a letter sent to Jon Snow supposedly by Ramsay. The letter claims that Stannis was killed, but is likely a lie since the Battle of Winterfell has yet to occur.

Of course, the show will likely change a lot of what goes on here, since Stannis’ storyline introduces a lot of new houses and characters. We’ll have to wait for Season 5 to see how much of it makes it into the show!
