Game of Thrones Season 5 is almost a year away, but showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are already talking about the show's next installment in positive terms. In fact, they think they might be able to surpass themselves once again!

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, David and Dan confirm the new season will mostly contain a mix of material from A Feast for Crows and A Dance With Dragons, the fourth and fifth books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. The two books run concurrently, with each book focusing on a different set of characters, so it's no surprise that the show is melding the two.

That said, some book fans have been worried Season 5 will be lackluster, because the fourth and fifth books are considered by many to contain some of the weakest material in the series. But the showrunners are confident than can do something great.

"The fear [of Season 5 being a letdown after Season 4] started to dissipate when we outlined it and realized how much story we had to tell," D&D told Entertainment Weekly. "Now that we’re nearly finished with the first drafts of each episode, we see no reason why the coming season shouldn’t be the strongest yet."

D&D also have some hints about what we can expect in the new season. On one hand, they mention that in some ways the world of the show is starting "to shrink for sure." For example, now Jon and Stannis, previously characters who were in far flung reaches of Westeros, are now in the same place. The showrunners saw Season 4 as the midpoint of the show, so we should probably expect to see a lot more plotlines coming together as we head into Season 5 and beyond.

That said, we will meet new characters in Season 5, and David and Dan confirm some of them will be from Dorne, Oberyn's home kingdom.

"There will be Dorne, and we’re excited about it," the showrunners confirmed, which lines up with some of the casting rumors we've heard. "Who wouldn’t want to hang out in Dorne? They have admirable values and priorities. And have you seen Oberyn’s coat?" Good point!
