Varys (Conleth Hill) is one of the most mysterious characters on Game of Thrones. Unlike the nakedly ambitious Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen), it's unclear what this eunuch's end goal is. Are all his machinations for personal power? The good of the realm? Is his goal as basic as survival? In the Season 4 finale he helped rescue Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) and bolted from King's Landing; will we learn more about his end game in Season 5?

According to showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, we will absolutely learn more about what Varys is after next year.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, D&D compare Littlefinger and Varys, explaining that while it's clear Littlefinger wants nothing more than to sit on that throne, Varys's motivations are less clear. That said, they point out that Varys's assertion that his number one priority is self preservation is clearly not quite right, since he was willing to throw away his life in King's Landing to save Tyrion.

So, what's the deal? Obviously, the showrunners didn't explain exactly what Varys wants, but they did say this: "At the end of the season... he throws away the entire life he’s built for himself in King’s Landing to save Tyrion’s life. Now what? … 'Now what?' will become eminently clear in Season 5."

OK. So he does have a next move in mind. We can't wait to see what it is!
