There was lots of backlash amongst fans of A Song of Ice and Fire after Lady Stoneheart did not make her much-rumored appearance in the Season 4 finale of Game of Thrones, but fans still held out hope that the character would appear in Season 5. Now though, it appears that those hopes are dashed as well.

In the books, Lady Stoneheart is the reanimated corpse of Cat Stark (Michelle Fairley). The introduction of her character is one of the more shocking reveals in the series, and she seems like she’s going to be important to the overall story, especially to the arcs of Jaime and Brienne. But if Michelle Fairley’s recent interview with Entertainment Weekly is any indication, she’s not important enough to include on the show.

The interviewer asks Michelle point-blank if it’s true that Stoneheart will never appear on the show, to which Michelle replies, “Yeah, the character’s dead. She’s dead.” Now before you get caught up in semantics over Lady Stoneheart technically being dead, Michelle goes on to say, “You respect the writers’ decision. I knew the arc, and that was it. They can’t stick to the books 100 percent. It’s impossible — they only have 10 hours per season. They have got to keep it dramatic and exciting, and extraneous stuff along the way gets lost in order to maintain the quality of brilliant show.”

We certainly don’t consider Stoneheart to be extraneous, especially after the show already included the Brotherhood without Banners and Beric Dondarrion’s resurrection, since their whole purpose is to foreshadow the coming of Lady Stoneheart, but we’ll just have to get used to the fact that the show makes more changes from the books every season, and that trend will only increase moving forward.

We’re still holding out hope that Michelle Fairley is being coy and HBO has her under a gag order so she can’t tell the truth about returning to the show, but unfortunately, it really does sound like there will never be a Lady Stoneheart on Game of Thrones.
