When we last saw Sam (John Bradley) on Game of Thrones, he was macking on Gilly at the Wall while Wildlings were pounding down their doors. Sam survived the battle, and watched with caution as he bid farewell to Jon, but what’s going to happen to him next season? A Song of Ice and Fire gives us the likely answer.

In the books, Sam leads the effort to elect Jon Snow as the new Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. And how does Jon thank his BFF for hooking him up? By sending him away to Old Town!
Jon realizes that Maester Aemon probably won’t live much longer, and the Night’s Watch will be in need of a new maester, and Sam is the smartest guy he knows, so he gets the call. Jon sends Sam, Aemon, and Gilly to the Citadel in Old Town where Sam will begin his maester training. There’s also a subplot wherein Jon swaps out Gilly’s baby for Mance Rayder’s baby so Melisandre cannot ceremonially sacrifice the latter, but we’re guessing this plotline will be cut out since we didn’t see any wife or baby of Mance in the Season 4 finale.
On the journey, Sam and his crew stop in Braavos where Sam runs into Arya, though he doesn’t learn who she is. While there they hear about Dany and her dragons, which are very interesting to Aemon. Eventually they continue their journey to Old Town, and on the way Maester Aemon dies and Sam and Gilly sleep together. Sam finally does make it to Old Town, where he begins his training.
