Of all the new additions to the cast rumored for Game of Thrones Season 5, we are perhaps most excited about meeting the Sand Snakes. Just who or what are the Sand Snakes you may ask? In the A Song of Ice and Fire books, the Sand Snakes are the eight bastard daughters of Oberyn Martell. Casting rumors suggest we’ll meet at least three of them in Season 5, so let’s go over them first.

Obara Sand. She is Oberyn’s eldest daughter, whom is also the most warrior-like among the group. Her mother was a whore from Old Town, which is located in the Reach. In the show, she is rumored to fight a series regular.

Nymeria Sand. Oberyn’s second born is the daughter of a noble woman from the free city of Volantis, and is described as olive-skinned, elegant, and beautiful. In the books, she is scheduled to take Oberyn’s place on King Tommen’s small council. According to casting rumors, the show is looking for a multi-ethnic actress to fill the role.

Tyene Sand. In the books, Tyene is described as fair-skinned and blonde, and she is the daughter of a Septa. She takes after her father in her knowledge of poisons.

The other Sand Snakes may or may not appear, as we’ve heard no casting rumors alluding to them.

Sallera Sand. Daughter of a Summer Islander, Sallera is dark-skinned and largely absent from the books. She is supposedly in Old Town at the Citadel, possibly in disguise as a man name Arellas.

The other four Sand Snakes are much younger, all being the daughters of Ellaria Sand. They are: Obella, Dorea, Loreza, and Elia, whom we heard Oberyn mention in Season 4.
