On Game of Thrones, no character is safe. Even those who seem the least likely to perish can be killed off at any moment. So should we be worried about the fate of one of the show’s greatest schemers, Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish (Aidan Gillen), heading into Season 5?

The truth is, Littlefinger’s future is murkier than almost everyone else’s on the show. He and Sansa have basically caught up to their story in the books, while most other characters still have at least a full season’s worth of material to wade through.

Knowing this, the show could go in two different directions with Littlefinger. They could make up some story for him to kill time and allow the other characters to catch up to him in the narrative. If they go this route, it seems unlikely that Littlefinger will be killed off this season.

However, the other option for the show is to draw plot from the still-unpublished next novel in A Song of Ice and Fire, The Winds of Winter. If this is the case, then all bets are off. No one knows what will happen to Littlefinger in the next book, and he very well could meet his doom. Many fans have been predicting Littlefinger’s downfall for a while now, with most claiming it will come at the hands of Sansa. According to George R. R. Martin’s World of Ice and Fire coauthor, Elio Garcia, Sansa has a controversial chapter in the upcoming book. Might it be that she murders Littlefinger?

Frankly, we like Littlefinger and his wicked ways, so we hope he sticks around to make it to Season 6, but at this point anything can happen.
